Building BUGs
A Broad View of the New York City *BSD User Group
The New York City *BSD Group's origins grew from a small meeting in December 2003.
Since then, NYCBUG morphed into a rough model of how to create and maintain a BSD User Group, not to mention conducting BSDCons, providing services for the wider community while having monthly meetings that branch out the community beyond the usual suspects. On more organizational matters, NYC*BUG continues work a certain agnosticism in relation to the individual BSD projects, while operating without a set membership and conducting no elegant democratic structures.
What is the method to the NYC*BUG story, which could probably be labeled a "success" after over eleven years of existence? What can a group of students in say, Irrelevant, South Dakota or Latvia, learn from our experiences?
This presentation will approach those questions and more, drawing some of the larger lessons applicable to other similar open source entities.
