In this announcement - Registration - Emergency contact number - Registration packs - Lunch/Dinner/Drinks - Schedule changes - Items for sale Registration Online registration was scheduled to close today (10 May). We have streamlined our procedures and are now able to keep online registration going until Thursday at noon (EST). A late fee of $50 applies to any registration received after that time. Payment must be in cash, money order, travelers cheque, or certified cheque. No credit cards are accepted for registration at the conference. Emergency contact number The emergency contact number for the University of Ottawa is (613) 562-5499. You can reach the campus security services. We will be in 212, 219, and 221 of Morisset Hall. Registration packs Please pick up your registration packs on Thursday night. Otherwise you will be joining a long line up on Friday morning. We don't want anyone to miss the talks they want to see. Lunch/Dinner/Drinks We have made arrangements with three local pubs. Thursday, 3:30-8:00pm (and perhaps later) - Registration packs may be picked up at the Royal Oak (161 Laurier Ave.) tel (613) 230-9223 Friday - lunch (12:30-2:00pm) On Friday, you can purchase your lunch in the University cafeteria. Friday - drinks/dinner On Friday night, we are gathering at the Black Thorn, 15 Clarence St., Byward Market. tel (613) 241-0712. You must arrive by 6:30 to be sure of a table. This is about a mile (1.5 km) from the venue. Saturday - lunch (12:30-2:00pm) The University cafeteria is closed on Saturday, so we are gathering at the Royal Oak pub (a 5 minute walk from the conference venue). Saturday - drinks/dinner On Saturday night, we are heading to Patty Bolands, 101 Clarence St., Byward Market, tel (613) 789-7822. You must arrive by 6:30 to be sure of a table. This is about a mile (1.5 km) from the venue. Schedule Changes Ian Darwin's talk on OpenBSD firewalls canceled because of personal reasons. We may have another OpenBSD talk to replace it. The NFSv4 BOF has been schedule for 4:30 on Friday. We have added an All Conference Assembly to the end of the proceedings on Saturday. This will be a short set of announcements and some thanks before starting the key signing session. From there, we will head off for the evening entertainment. Items for sale BSDMall will be in attendance selling a range of BSD-related items during the conference. Theo de Raadt is rumoured to be bringing a box of 50 CDs of the newly- released OpenBSD 3.5. Save on shipping costs, shipping time, and help support your favourite BSD. They rely on your support to stay alive! We also hope to have several titles by NoStarch for sale. Are you one of those who leaves things to the last minute? Visit today! Schedule changes A new talk has been added to the schedule for Friday. Joseph Potvin will talk about Raising Awareness About BSD in the Government of Canada. The libpcap BOF has been rescheduled for Saturday morning. The talks by Jay Lawrence (Using Perl to write command line utilities) and Jean-Francois Laforest (Service Routing Redundancy Daemon) have been withdrawn as they will be unable to attend the conference because of personal reasons. Our apologies for this late change. Location The conference will be held in Morisset Hall, which is centrally located on campus. We have highlighted Morisset Hall on this map. The talks will be held in rooms 212, 219, and 221. All of these are in a hallway just off the main hall (look for the vending machines) on the second floor. We are close to residence and to the university center where you can grab something for lunch. I recently returned from a trip to Linux World Expo in New York City. BSD interest at the convention exceeded my expectations. I was in touch with many people who are interested in speaking at BSDCan. I met several people from companies who want to support the conference. They are excited about a BSD conference on the east coast. This means the display area will be much larger than originally anticipated. I was also in touch with several user groups from throughout the north eastern US. They too were excited about an east coast BSD conference. They'll be coming. The most important development is the government departments that have indicated they wish to be involved with BSDCan. They are very interested in the security aspect of BSDCan. All of this combines to make a much larger and better conference than I originally anticipated. I will update the website with new presentations and sponsorship information as soon as it is confirmed. Conference announcement : 7 October 2003BSDCan is pleased to announce the first Canadian BSD conference. It will be held May 13-16, 2004 in Ottawa, Canada. BSDCan would like to invite everyone interested in BSD to submit papers. For details, please see http://www.bsdcan.org/papers.html. We plan to keep costs to a minimum. As such, the conference will be held at University of Ottawa and accommodation is available within the University residences. Please see University of Ottawa Summer Accommodation for more information. Hotels are also within close walking distance of the conference venue. The conference venue is within walking distance of the Byward Market, a great section of town for bars and pubs. This will be a popular meeting area for the BOFs. Attendees should find Ottawa cheaper than most other conference venues with many things to do and see away from the conference. Conference costCosts have not been determined, but initial estimates indicate that the attendance fee will be less than CAD$200 (approximately US$150). An announcement will be made when the fee has been determined. |
