FreeBSD installer replacement project
Sysinstall - It's got to go
FreeBSD has been using sysinstall as it's installer for a Very Long Time now (TM) As features and functionality have been added sysinstall has not kept up. It's time for a change.
Fairly recently, pc-sysinstall was merged into FreeBSD HEAD. While PC-BSD has a nice GUI front end to pc-sysinstall and has been using pc-sysinstall to do installs for quite some time now, that isn't appropriate for FreeBSD. This talk is a little bit about what makes pc-sysinstall a very nice backend, but more importantly, what makes the (yet un-named) front end great. It also covers a roadmap and to-do list of things that need to happen before sysinstall can be retired for good.
Nathan Whitehorn has recently stepped up to the plate and is working very hard to ensure that a new installer is ready for inclusion in FreeBSD 9.0, due this summer. Hear about what this will bring to the table, and how FreeBSD is going to get there.
